I have always worked in a people facing industry, giving me the opportunity to absorb different cultures, inspiring my travels all over the world, including around the African continent, I settled in Nigeria for a period of time, leading a special needs department in and international school. 2019 was my first visit to The Gambia and I have returned several times since. I always visit different villages sitting with the people talking about life, (through an interpreter and laughs at my English accent trying to say some local words), no matter which Africa village, the same theme comes up, the pride in their land and to be self-sufficient for the next generation. I saw the lack of resources but the adaptation to make use of what they do have. This was motivation to look at my resources differently and see how they could be utilised/up cycled/fixed when gifted.

I have lived my life in The Gambia, never travelled. I went to a village school, without pen, paper or a complete book to read. I would study by moon light or fire wood. There was no electricity so the flash of lightning would be my street light in the rainy season. I longed for something different but due to not having many options I built my adult career in driving tourist all over The Gambia, meeting lots of different nationalities and learning about other lands through their eyes. I truly understand the need for young African minds and dreams to expand out of the village and create more access to wider experiences and better for themselves, their extended family and future children. I remember at the start 2019, wanting to give a helping hand to the poor people in the village, driving to collect 7 bags from the shipment, taking them to distribute and seeing the joy and usefulness the donated items brought, that made me continue fighting.

I remember as a young child around 8 years old my mum always helping people especially children by sending barrels and money abroad. I started saving my pocket money to give to my mum to help her, this gave both me and my mum such huge satisfaction which I have taken into adulthood, and I now have my own saying it’s not about the money or the amount, but the most important thing is making a positive difference.

currently in my work we have new dedicated charities we support changing every two years. I always help for example world food day where each employee brings in food/cakes of their culture and I sell them; I have played a Santa Claus role at a children’s hospice giving out gifts from donations and the proceeds made from work.

I have often visit Cuba where I take clothes, school equipment and medication so much so an airline made me an envoy which meant i could travel with them anytime without paying for the extra suitcase of donations they called it humanitarian. a few years ago, i joined a men’s group for prostate cancer where i have helped raise money by doing walks for awareness in their quest to purchase a mobile screening unit, this has been so satisfying, my mum’s passion to make a positive difference still lives on as she passed away from lymphoma. health awareness worldwide is needed and i feel being a trustee will allow me to spread the word.

She became a trustee to contribute to the community by offering my time, supporting growth, and continuing to help others in meaningful ways.

In the UK, she volunteered at church-run winter night shelters and helped prepare meals at local homeless shelters. Her wish is to expand this to local schools and communities nationwide.

“I’ve also organised and contributed to international donations of clothing, school supplies, and other essentials to support under-resourced schools and communities abroad.  Being a trustee gives me the opportunity to combine these values and experiences to further the mission of the charity.”

Being a decedent of the Maroons in Jamaica, I’ve always had an understanding that the mother land is the only place I will truly be loved and want to show that same love back.

As a teenager I was privileged to visit Cape Coast in Ghana which enhanced my perspective even further than just watching films, since then I have travelled to numerous countries across the continent and want to keep doing this whilst also having a positive impact.

I’m heavily involved with sport in the UK and this will be my main focus, to bring my knowledge and resource throughout Africa and the diaspora.

I’ve seen how sport can bring people from different backgrounds together and also open doors that may have otherwise been closed.

I’m honoured and excited to do.

I’m looking forward to contributing to Africa’s independence. There’s a lot of work to do but it’s definitely possible to see Africa have the global strength it deserves!
